What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a primary care profession, focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders, and the effects of these conditions on patients’ general health. Commonly treated conditions include back and neck pain, postural problems, sporting injuries, muscle and joint deterioration, restricted mobility and occupational ill-health.
Osteopaths’ patient-centred approach to health and well-being means they consider symptoms in the context of the patient’s full medical history, as well as their lifestyle and personal circumstances. This holistic approach ensures that all treatment is tailored to the individual patient.
What to expect
The first consultation generally takes 45 minutes depending on the complexity of the case. Our osteopath will start by taking a medical history and details of the presenting complaint. You will then be asked to perform a series of simple movements in order to find areas of pain and joint restriction. You will usually be asked to remove some clothing near the area of the body to be examined. Our osteopaths will then conduct a more thorough examination using techniques specific to the current complaint. This generally involves neurological and orthopaedic testing.
Patients may be asked to undress to their underwear so that the presenting complaint can be assessed fully. However, this can also be achieved wearing shorts or loose clothing if undressing is an issue.
After taking a case history and assessing the presenting complaint with an in depth physical examination, our osteopath will then provide manual therapy appropriate to your presenting injury. This usually involves joint mobilisation and manipulation techniques combined with massage and stretching techniques. Our osteopaths will discuss with you the most appropriate treatment plan and where possible, will provide you with an estimation of the number of consultations that may be needed to treat your condition effectively. Some patients only require one appointment; others may have a course of therapy or return periodically for the long-term management of a condition. Normally the treatment of a patient is determined according to their progression rather than the prescription of a set number of treatment sessions.
How much does treatment cost?
First and standard consultations within our clinic cost £45 per consultation.
